Here are links to various pieces I've written over the past couple of years. Note there are short stories, essays, poems, and excerpts from book-length works. I've wondered if my interests or types of writing are too diverse.
Recently an agent confirmed my suspicions when she said that maybe I need to narrow my focus. I wasn't surprised and I even agreed with her (well, I agreed with her half-heartedly). Ironically, this little conversation took place while I was toting around a magazine that encouraged its readers to "Write Short to Break Out!" By "short," the editors of the magazine meant write personal essays, short fiction, freelance writing, etc. They meant ALL or SOME of these types of writing, not to just focus on one type. This same magazine had an article with the imperative title, "Diversify Your Writing Portfolio." Hmm.
The end of the matter? Who knows. Maybe the agent was right. On the other hand, it looks like I'm already following the advice of the magazine writers. What remains is to see what other people think. And to do that, I need to get the words out to the world. So check out the Downloads. See if there's something there that connects with you in some way. In the meantime, I'll keep writing and if my focus isn't narrow enough, well, at least I'll have a collection of somewhat finished works of sundry kinds. Enjoy.
